OVERVIEW

A commission to turn a three-fold room divider into a piece of work. The screen is made of twelve framed plywood panels, painted white and drawn in bold black line. Each panel holds just a fragment, like a crescent moon, a ray of sun, a closed eye, a leaf or a curve of lips, but read together they form one continuous image. Turn the screen around and the other side tells a second one.

THE idea

A screen is something you move, fold and look at from both sides, so the drawing had to work in pieces as well as a whole. The frames break the image into windows and the eye joins it back together. The palette is kept to just black and white so the line does all the work, and the screen sits quietly in a room until you notice the face hidden in it.
